About the campaign

In 2002, the Scottish Government launched Choose Life, a ten year strategy and action plan to reduce suicide in Scotland. Choose Life set out a plan to ensure that action is taken nationally and locally to build skills, develop training, encourage people to seek help early, improve knowledge and awareness of 'what works' to prevent suicide, and to encourage partnership working and improved co-ordination between the help available.

A major obstacle to effective suicidal prevention is the stigma associated with and surrounding suicide. By openly and freely talking about problems and discussing solutions, we can lessen misunderstandings and intolerance that surround suicide and depression.

Serious talk about suicide does not create or increase risk, it reduces it.

The best way to identify the possibility of suicide is to ask someone directly. Talking openly and showing genuine concern about someone's thoughts of suicide can offer a source of relief - talking is often the key to preventing the immediate danger of suicide.
